Christianna Brand was a prolific mystery and fiction writer whose career stretched from 1941 to the early 1980s, with posthumous collections still appearing as recently as 2019. Her largest body of work is the Inspector Cockrill series, which includes nine entries starting with Heads You Lose in 1941 and the well-known Green for Danger from 1944. She also wrote the Inspector Charlesworth and Inspector Chucky series, giving her three distinct detective series across her career.

Beyond mysteries, Brand wrote the Nurse Matilda children’s books, a series of five titles published between 1964 and 2005 (with a collected edition arriving after her lifetime). Her standalone novels number twelve, spanning from The Single Pilgrim in 1946 to The Brides of Aberdar in 1982. She also contributed to numerous anthologies and published several short story collections, including the aptly named Buffet for Unwelcome Guests.

With 42 books spread across seven categories, Brand’s work covers detective fiction, children’s literature, standalone novels, and short stories. Her publishing history runs more than four decades, and her continued presence in anthologies decades later speaks to how well her mystery writing has held up.
