Charles M. Blow is a journalist and author who has written the visual op-ed column for The New York Times since 2008. Born and raised in Gibsland, Louisiana, he attended Grambling State University before beginning a career in journalism that included work at the Detroit News and National Geographic. His column covers American politics, race, poverty, and cultural issues, and he has become one of the most widely read opinion writers in the country.
His first book, Fire Shut Up in My Bones (2014), is a memoir about growing up Black and poor in rural Louisiana, dealing with family violence, and coming to terms with his bisexuality. The book was adapted into an opera by composer Terence Blanchard, becoming the first opera by a Black composer staged at the Metropolitan Opera when it premiered in 2021. His second book, The Devil You Know: A Black Power Manifesto (2021), argues that Black Americans should consider a reverse migration to the South as a strategy for building political power.
