Carly Nugent is an Australian writer who lives in Bright, Victoria. She began publishing fiction in 2011 with Soft Belly Days, followed by Dream Girl in 2013. Her short fiction has appeared in a number of publications, including the Bellevue Literary Review and the Award Winning Australian Writing anthology.
Nugent is best known for The Peacock Detectives (2020), a middle grade novel about an eleven-year-old girl named Cassie who investigates the disappearance of peacocks from her neighborhood. The book won the Readings Children’s Book Prize, received a CBCA Honour distinction, and was shortlisted for the Text Prize. While her earlier work was aimed at adult readers, The Peacock Detectives showed Nugent’s ability to write for younger audiences while still handling serious subjects like mental illness and family loss.
