Carlos Fuentes (1928-2012) was a Mexican novelist, essayist, and diplomat who became one of the most prominent Latin American writers of the twentieth century. He was a central figure in the Latin American literary boom of the 1960s alongside Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Julio Cortazar, and Mario Vargas Llosa. His first novel, Where the Air is Clear (1958), announced his arrival as a major voice in Mexican letters, and The Death of Artemio Cruz (1962) cemented his international reputation.
Fuentes wrote more than twenty novels over a career that spanned fifty years. His work frequently explored Mexican history, national identity, and the collision between indigenous, colonial, and modern cultures. Terra Nostra (1975), an enormous novel spanning several centuries, is considered one of his most ambitious works. The Old Gringo (1985) became the first Mexican novel to appear on the New York Times bestseller list. Beyond fiction, Fuentes was also an accomplished essayist, with works like The Buried Mirror offering extended meditations on Hispanic civilization and culture. He received numerous awards throughout his career, including the Cervantes Prize in 1987.
