Brandy Colbert grew up in Springfield, Missouri, studied journalism at Missouri State University, and lives in Los Angeles. She works as a copy editor and is on faculty at Hamline University’s MFA program in writing for children. Her debut novel, Pointe (2014), drew attention for its unflinching look at a teen dancer’s complicated life.

Colbert’s books center Black characters and deal directly with race, identity, sexuality, and community. Little and Lion (2017) won the Stonewall Book Award, and her nonfiction book Black Birds in the Sky (2021), about the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, won the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award. She has also edited anthologies including Black Enough, which collects stories by Black YA authors.
