Bo Caldwell has published two novels, both rooted in the experiences of Americans living in China during the first half of the 20th century. The Distant Land of My Father (2001) tells the story of a man who stays in Shanghai after Pearl Harbor and the years of separation that follow for his family. The novel draws on Caldwell’s own family history and the real experiences of Americans caught up in the turbulence of 20th century China.
City of Tranquil Light (2010) follows a young American couple who travel to a small Chinese city as missionaries in the early 1900s and spend their lives there through decades of change. Both novels are quiet, carefully observed stories about faith, displacement, and the bonds that hold people together across distance and time. Caldwell writes with restraint and close attention to the daily textures of life in a foreign place.
