Blake Crouch spent years writing crime fiction and thrillers before Wayward Pines broke through. His early Andrew Z. Thomas novels were dark serial killer stories. Pines (2012), the first Wayward Pines book, shifted toward science fiction while keeping the thriller structure intact. A Secret Service agent wakes up in a small town he can’t leave, and the reason why is the first book’s central mystery.
Fox adapted Wayward Pines as a television series in 2015, with M. Night Shyamalan directing the pilot. The show ran two seasons. The exposure helped Crouch reach a wider audience, and he used the momentum to publish Dark Matter (2016), a standalone novel about a physicist kidnapped into a parallel universe. It became a bestseller and was adapted by Apple TV+.
Recursion (2019) dealt with false memories and the nature of consciousness. Upgrade (2022) explored genetic engineering. Crouch has moved steadily from genre thriller toward high-concept science fiction, though his books remain plot-driven with short chapters and fast pacing.
Crouch co-wrote several novels with J.A. Konrath early in his career and has been involved in television development. He lives in Colorado.
