Blaize Clement was an American mystery writer best known for the Dixie Hemingway series. The books follow a former Florida sheriff’s deputy who becomes a pet sitter on Siesta Key and keeps stumbling into murder investigations. Clement published seven novels in the series, starting with Curiosity Killed the Cat Sitter in 2005.
Clement drew on her own Florida Gulf Coast surroundings for the series. The books combine cozy mystery elements — a small community, a likable amateur sleuth, animals — with a protagonist who has a darker backstory than the genre typically allows. Dixie’s past in law enforcement and the tragedy that drove her from the force give the character more weight than a typical cozy heroine.
Clement died in 2011 after completing The Cat Sitter’s Pajamas. Her son John Clement continued the series for four more books, finishing with The Cat Sitter and the Canary in 2016.
