Beryl Markham (1902-1986) was a British-born aviator, horse trainer, and writer who grew up in Kenya. She is best known for West with the Night (1942), a memoir about her childhood in East Africa, her career training racehorses, and her record-setting solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean from England to Nova Scotia in 1936.
West with the Night was praised by Ernest Hemingway, who called Markham a far better writer than himself. The book fell out of print for decades before being rediscovered in the 1980s, after which it became a bestseller. The Splendid Outcast (1987) collected her short stories, published posthumously. Markham’s work also appears in the Chronicles Abroad travel series and other anthologies.
