Bertrice Small (1937-2015) published her first novel, The Kadin, in 1978 and went on to write more than fifty novels over the next three decades. She was known for strong-willed heroines, detailed historical settings, and explicit romantic content that pushed boundaries in the genre. Her stories range from the Ottoman Empire and Elizabethan England to the Scottish Borders and Renaissance Italy.

Small’s most famous work is the Skye O’Malley Saga, which begins with Skye O’Malley (1980) and follows an Irish noblewoman through the courts and intrigues of Tudor England. This series connects directly to the Wyndham Saga, which picks up with characters introduced in Blaze Wyndham (1988), and both feed into Skye’s Legacy, continuing the family saga through the Stuart period. Readers who want the full family story should read the O’Malley and Wyndham books before starting Skye’s Legacy.

Her later career brought the World of Hetar series, a fantasy romance saga following the half-faerie heroine Lara, and The Border Chronicles, set along the Scottish-English border. The Border Chronicles also overlaps with The Silk Merchant’s Daughters, which moves the action to Renaissance Florence. Small’s Channel series added a contemporary erotic twist, with women discovering a mysterious television channel that lets them live out fantasies. She also contributed to several multi-author anthologies and wrote numerous standalone novels set in periods from the Byzantine Empire to medieval Wales.
