Benjamin Dean Henry is an English author born in 1993 who began his career as a celebrity reporter for BuzzFeed UK before turning to children’s and young adult fiction. His debut novel, Me, My Dad and the End of the Rainbow (2021), illustrated by Sandhya Prabhat, follows twelve-year-old Archie whose parents are divorcing after his father comes out as gay. The book won a 2022 Diverse Children’s Book Award and was shortlisted for the 2022 Waterstones Children’s Book Prize.
Dean has spoken about writing books that provide LGBTQ+ representation for younger readers — the kind of stories he did not have access to as a child. His middle grade fiction tends to address family and identity in an accessible, warm register, while his YA output moves into darker territory. How to Die Famous (2024) draws directly on his experience as a celebrity reporter, using the entertainment media world as the backdrop for a thriller.
He has also been active as an advocate for diverse children’s publishing, contributing to BookTrust’s recommended reading lists and speaking at schools through the Speakers for Schools program.
