Ben Guterson is an American author of middle-grade novels. He grew up in the Seattle area and worked as a teacher and at Microsoft before turning to writing fiction. His first novel, Winterhouse, was published in 2018 and landed on the New York Times bestseller list.
The Winterhouse trilogy follows Elizabeth Somers, an orphan who is sent to stay at a grand, mysterious hotel in the mountains. The hotel is full of word puzzles, hidden passages, and a magical book that connects to a dark family secret. The series has been praised for its puzzles, which readers can solve alongside the characters. Chloe Bristol illustrated all three books.
Guterson’s newer series, The World-Famous Nine, is an adventure about a group of kids. He has also written The Einsteins of Vista Point (2022), a standalone novel about two kids who discover a time-travel secret in a small coastal town.
