Barry Sadler was an American soldier, singer, and author who led a remarkable and turbulent life. After serving as a Green Beret medic in Vietnam, he recorded “The Ballad of the Green Berets” in 1966, which became one of the best-selling singles of the decade. When his music career faded, he turned to writing fiction, creating the Casca series about an immortal soldier cursed by Jesus to wander the earth and fight in every war until the Second Coming.
Sadler wrote the first 22 Casca novels himself before his death in 1989. Other authors, including Tony Roberts, have continued the series, bringing the total to 59 books. His standalone novels, including Cry Havoc and Phu Nham, also draw on military themes. Sadler’s life ended violently at age 49 after he was shot in the head in Guatemala City under circumstances that were never fully explained.
