April Genevieve Tucholke grew up on a farm in the Midwest and has lived across the United States and in Scotland. She holds a BA in Creative Writing and has published books in seventeen countries. Her work spans YA gothic fiction, fantasy retellings, picture books, and adult nonfiction.

Her debut, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea (2013), introduced a gothic YA voice that carried through to its sequel and her standalone novels. The Boneless Mercies (2018) retells Beowulf with an all-female cast and was named a Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year. Seven Endless Forests (2020) is a companion novel set in the same world, drawing on King Arthur. Tucholke also curated the YA horror anthology Slasher Girls & Monster Boys (2015) and co-wrote The Secret Life of Hidden Places (2024) with Stefan Bachmann, a nonfiction tour of the world’s hidden rooms and secret passages.
