Antonio Manzini is an Italian author and actor who writes the Rocco Schiavone crime series. The 17-book series follows a Roman deputy police chief who gets transferred to the Alpine town of Aosta as punishment for his unconventional methods. Schiavone hates the cold, misses Rome, and solves crimes with a mix of sharp intelligence and disregard for rules.
The series started with Pista nera (2013, published in English as Black Run) and has continued through 2023. Several books have been translated into English and other languages, and the series was adapted into a popular Italian television show. Manzini’s writing blends crime fiction with dark humor and a strong sense of place, contrasting Schiavone’s Roman personality with the mountain setting he’s stuck in.
