Anne Inez McCaffrey was born in 1926 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Her father worked in publishing. She graduated from Radcliffe College in 1947 with degrees in斯拉夫 languages and literature. After marriage and two children, McCaffrey began writing science fiction in the 1960s. Weyr Search won the Hugo Award in 1968. Dragonriders of Pern won the Nebula in 1969. She became the first woman to receive both major science fiction awards.
Dragonriders of Pern began as a novella and expanded into the world McCaffrey returned to for the rest of her career. She wrote 18 novels in the series between 1968 and 2003, plus two with her son Todd. Other major works include the Crystal Singer series, the Ship Who Sang series about mentally impaired pilots bonded to AI-controlled ships, and the Tower and Hive series about psychics protecting humanity from colonial expansion.
McCaffrey moved to Ireland in 1970 and settled in Dragonhold-Underhill, a house she designed in County Wicklow. Ireland became her primary home and publisher. She hosted the science fiction convention Octocon from her home. McCaffrey bred horses and dogs. She died at Dragonhold-Underhill in 2011 at 85, leaving behind unpublished material completed later by Todd McCaffrey.
