Anna Marie Tendler is a multimedia artist, photographer, and writer based in Connecticut. She started a Tumblr blog in 2007 dedicated to daily makeup looks that grew to over 350,000 followers, and she worked as a makeup artist and hairstylist on Broadway productions including Oh, Hello and Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812.
Her memoir, Men Have Called Her Crazy, was published in August 2024 by Simon & Schuster. The book opens with Tendler checking herself into a psychiatric hospital in early 2021 and moves between her time in treatment and the experiences that brought her there. She writes about unrequited high school love, losing her virginity at sixteen to a twenty-eight-year-old, and the decision to freeze her eggs. The memoir debuted at number two on the New York Times Best Seller list.
Outside of writing, Tendler is known for her self-portrait photography series Rooms in the First House, which explores themes of loss, anger, and identity through atmospheric images set in domestic spaces. She holds a master’s degree in Costume Studies from NYU, where her thesis examined female body politics. She also owns Silk Parlor, a business that handcrafts Victorian-style lampshades.
