Ann Napolitano has published four novels since 2004, and each one explores how families hold together or fall apart under pressure. Her debut, Within Arm’s Reach, examined a multigenerational Irish-American family dealing with an unplanned pregnancy. A Good Hard Look (2011) took a different approach, fictionalizing the life of Flannery O’Connor and the people around her in 1950s Georgia.
Dear Edward (2020) was the book that reached the widest audience. Inspired by a real plane crash, it follows a twelve-year-old boy who survives while everyone else on the flight, including his family, does not. The novel alternates between the flight itself and Edward’s slow recovery, and Apple TV+ adapted it into a series in 2023. Her most recent book, Hello Beautiful (2023), traces four sisters in Chicago across several decades and became a major book club selection. Napolitano writes about grief and connection with patience, letting her characters reveal themselves gradually rather than through dramatic turns.
