Angie Thomas grew up in Jackson, Mississippi, where she witnessed gun violence at a young age. Her mother took her to the local library after Thomas saw a gang shootout at age six, and that experience sparked a lifelong love of stories. She earned a BFA in Creative Writing from Belhaven University and is a former teen rapper.
Thomas wrote The Hate U Give after the 2009 shooting of Oscar Grant, an unarmed Black man killed by police in California. The incident inspired a short story for her creative writing class about a teenage girl who witnesses her best friend shot by police, and that story eventually became her debut novel. The book hit number one on the New York Times bestseller list and was adapted into a 2018 film starring Amandla Stenberg. Her other works include On the Come Up, Concrete Rose, and the middle grade fantasy series Nic Blake and the Remarkables, which draws on African American folklore. She now lives in Atlanta.
