He has worked as a designer since 1995 and hosted HGTV’s 24 Hour Design for four seasons and Rate My Space for three seasons. He has appeared on over 50 television shows.

The Dangerous Art of Blending In (2018) is his debut YA novel, published by Balzer & Bray (HarperCollins). It follows seventeen-year-old Evan Panos, the son of strict Greek immigrants, who struggles with an abusive mother and growing feelings for his best friend Henry. The novel draws on Surmelis’s own experience growing up in a strict Greek household and was a Lambda Literary Award finalist for Best LGBT Young Adult novel.
