Andrew Child was born Andrew Grant, and he wrote thrillers under that name for years before changing it. The reason: his brother is Lee Child, creator of Jack Reacher, and Andrew was tapped to continue the series. Using the Child name made the transition clearer to readers.
Andrew grew up with the same influences as Lee. Both brothers were raised in Birmingham, England, and shared books growing up. Andrew studied English at the University of Sheffield, then worked in the theatre before moving to the U.S. His first novel, Even, appeared in 2009 under the Grant name, introducing investigator David Trevellyan.
The Jack Reacher handover began in 2020 with The Sentinel, credited to both Lee Child and Andrew Child. Lee provided guidance and editing while Andrew did most of the writing. Subsequent books shifted the balance further, with Andrew taking increasing control. Exit Strategy in 2025 is credited to Andrew Child alone.
Andrew’s own thrillers are tighter and faster than the Reacher books. This reflects different pacing instincts. Taking over Reacher meant adapting to a style his brother had developed over 24 novels. Readers debate whether the new books feel like the old ones. Andrew has said he’s not trying to imitate Lee perfectly, but to keep Reacher recognizable while letting the character evolve.
The brothers remain close. Lee lives in New York; Andrew lives in Wyoming with his wife, the novelist Tasha Alexander.
