Andre Dubus III was born in 1959 in Oceanside, California, and grew up in the former mill town of Haverhill, Massachusetts after his parents divorced. His father was the acclaimed short story writer Andre Dubus. Before establishing himself as a writer, he worked as a carpenter, bartender, halfway house counselor, and on road crews. His first published story won a National Magazine Award for Fiction in 1985.

The novel tells the story of a former Iranian Air Force colonel and a recovering addict locked in a dispute over a California bungalow. It was a finalist for the National Book Award and was adapted into a 2003 film that received three Academy Award nominations. His memoir Townie (2011) recounts his rough upbringing in Haverhill and his complicated relationship with his father.

His other novels include The Garden of Last Days (2008), Gone So Long (2019), and Such Kindness (2023).
