Alyssa Palombo writes historical fiction with a focus on art, music, and the lives of women in the past. Her debut novel, The Violinist of Venice (2015), tells the story of a young noblewoman who secretly studies violin with Antonio Vivaldi in 18th-century Venice. The book set the pattern for much of her later work: real historical settings, real artists or public figures, and fictional women caught up in their worlds.
Her next two novels stayed in Italy. The Most Beautiful Woman in Florence (2017) follows Simonetta Vespucci, the woman believed to have modeled for Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus. The Borgia Confessions (2020) takes on the infamous Borgia family through the eyes of two people drawn into their circle. Between these, The Spellbook of Katrina Van Tassel (2018) moved to colonial New York for a retelling of Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
Palombo returned to Venice with The Assassin of Venice (2024), a novel blending espionage and romance in the Renaissance city. She also published Heavy Metal Symphony (2021), a contemporary novel about a young woman in the metal music scene.
