Allen M. Steele has been writing science fiction since 1989, when his debut novel Orbital Decay launched the Near-Space series. That series, set in the relatively near future of orbital construction and lunar colonization, established his reputation as a hard science fiction writer who pays attention to the practical details of space travel and habitation. The series grew to five novels plus associated short fiction through 1997.

His other major series, Coyote, follows human colonists who settle an Earth-like moon around a distant star. Beginning with Coyote in 2002, the series expanded through eight novels that explore settlement, political conflict, and first contact. Beyond his series work, Steele has written ten standalone novels, six short story collections, and contributed to more than thirty anthologies. His short fiction has been particularly well received, earning him multiple Hugo Awards. He has also written non-fiction about the science fiction genre and contributed to David Brin’s Out Of Time shared-world project.
