Alison Bechdel began her career with the comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For, which ran from 1983 to 2008 and was collected into thirteen volumes. The strip followed a group of friends, mostly lesbians, through their daily lives and became one of the most recognizable works in queer comics. One strip from 1985 introduced what is now called the Bechdel Test, a measure of female representation in fiction that has become part of mainstream cultural discussion.

Her graphic memoir Fun Home (2006) told the story of her childhood and her complicated relationship with her father, a funeral home director and closeted gay man. The book received widespread critical praise and was named Time magazine’s best book of the year. Its Broadway adaptation won five Tony Awards. She followed it with Are You My Mother? (2012), a companion memoir focused on her relationship with her mother, and The Secret to Superhuman Strength (2021), which explored her lifelong obsession with exercise and fitness through the lens of philosophy and self-discovery.

Beyond her original works, Bechdel has contributed to numerous anthologies and has been featured in the Conversations with Artists interview series. Her drawing style blends careful detail with emotional honesty, and her writing balances humor with serious reflection on family, identity, and sexuality.
