Alan LeMay (1899-1964) was an American novelist and screenwriter who specialized in Western fiction. He began publishing in the late 1920s with Old Father Of Waters and went on to write more than a dozen novels set in the American frontier. His work stood out for its attention to historical detail and its willingness to treat Western subject matter with literary seriousness.
LeMay’s two most famous novels are The Searchers (1954) and The Unforgiven (1957), both of which became major Hollywood films. The Searchers, directed by John Ford, is now considered one of the greatest American films ever made. Before turning to novels full-time, LeMay also worked as a Hollywood screenwriter, contributing scripts to several Western films during the 1940s and 1950s. His posthumously published collections, including Spanish Crossing and West of Nowhere, have kept his short fiction available to new generations of readers.
