Agatha Christie is the best-selling novelist of all time. She is best known for her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, as well as the world’s longest-running play, The Mousetrap. Her books have sold over two billion copies in 44 languages.
Born in Torquay, Devon, in 1890, Christie began writing detective stories during World War I while working as a pharmacy assistant. This experience gave her a detailed knowledge of poisons, which she used frequently in her plots. Her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, introduced the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, who would become one of the most famous fictional characters in history.
Christie’s work is celebrated for its intricate plotting, clever “whodunit” puzzles, and keen observation of human nature. Her notable works include Murder on the Orient Express, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, and And Then There Were None. She was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 1971 for her contributions to literature.
