A.K. Blakemore started as a poet before moving into fiction. Her poetry collections Fondue and Shia LaBeouf drew attention for their sharp, off-kilter voice, and she has also translated the work of the Sicilian poet Catullus into English.

Her debut novel, The Manningtree Witches (2021), is set during the English Civil War and follows a young woman caught up in the witch hunts led by Matthew Hopkins in 1640s Essex. The book won the Desmond Elliott Prize and was shortlisted for several other awards. Her second novel, The Glutton (2023), tells the story of a man in 18th-century France with an insatiable appetite, based on the real life of Tarrare.
